Accessibility
Last updated: September 30, 2026
Sonus is an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) app. Its whole purpose is to help people who find speech difficult be heard, so accessibility is not an add-on for us — it is the product. This page explains what Sonus supports today, what it does not support yet, and how to reach us.
App Store accessibility support
These are the accessibility features we indicate on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. We only mark a feature as supported when it works across the common tasks in the app.
| Feature | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Sufficient Contrast | Supported | High Contrast mode strengthens colors and outlines across the board. |
| Differentiate Without Color Alone | Supported | Every card shows a picture and a word. Color is never the only cue. |
| Reduced Motion | Supported | Sonus follows the iOS Reduce Motion setting and stops its decorative animations. |
| VoiceOver | Not yet verified | Sonus has not yet been tested end to end with VoiceOver, so we do not claim support. |
| Voice Control | Not yet verified | Sonus has not yet been tested end to end with Voice Control, so we do not claim support. |
| Larger Text | Not yet | Sonus does not yet follow the iOS text size setting. Use Card Size to make cards and labels bigger. |
| Dark Interface | Not yet | Sonus currently uses a light appearance only. |
| Captions & Audio Descriptions | Not applicable | Sonus has no video content. |
Accessibility features in Sonus
-
Scanning mode
Categories and cards light up one at a time. A large Select button chooses the highlighted item and Next moves ahead. The step speed is adjustable from 0.5 to 3 seconds, for people who find precise tapping hard.
-
High contrast
Bolder colors and stronger outlines for people with low vision or in bright light.
-
Adjustable card size
Large (2 cards per row), Medium (3) or Small (4) — bigger targets for motor or visual needs, more words on screen when that works better.
-
Pictures and words together
Every card pairs a symbol or photo with its label, so meaning never depends on color alone.
-
Speech that fits the person
Choose the speaking language and a speed from very slow to very fast. Voice, pitch and volume controls are part of Advanced Voice. Advanced Voice is Premium.
-
Reduced motion
When Reduce Motion is on in iOS Settings, Sonus turns off decorative motion such as the animated mascot.
-
Haptic feedback
A gentle vibration confirms each tap. It can be turned off.
-
Parent lock
Hides adding, deleting and editing so a board stays the same. Unlocking asks a simple sum.
-
Works offline, no account
Speech is generated on the device. Sonus keeps talking without an internet connection and never asks for a sign-in.
-
Quick phrases & history
Frequently used sentences are one tap away, and recently spoken sentences can be repeated.
-
Apple Watch
Speak saved phrases from the wrist when a phone is not at hand.
-
14 languages
The interface and the ready-made cards are available in 14 languages.
Turning features on
- Open Sonus and go to the Profile tab.
- Under Appearance & Accessibility, choose Card Size and turn on High Contrast, Haptics or Scanning (Switch) Mode. Scan Speed appears once scanning is on.
- Under Voice, choose the speaking language and speech rate.
- Under Parental Lock, turn on Lock Editing.
Tip: If a device is used only for communication, iOS Guided Access keeps it in Sonus. Turn it on in Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access.
Known limitations
- VoiceOver and Voice Control: not yet tested end to end.
- Larger Text: text does not yet scale with the iOS text size setting.
- Dark appearance: not available yet.
- Apple Watch: accessibility support on the watch has not been evaluated yet.
We are working to improve these areas and will update this page as support changes.
